Children's Rights

Pa Nepal (Prisoners Assistance Nepal)

PA Nepal (Prisoners Assistance Nepal) is a grassroots organization that seeks to provide basic needs and human rights to prisoners and their children in Nepal.

PA Nepal’s role is to provide complete care for these children while their families are unable to do so due to incarceration or poverty, and to ultimately reintegrate them with their families in their home communities wherever possible. Each child is encouraged to maintain a relationship with their relatives and PA Nepal makes every effort to keep lines of communication open and supports frequent visits to family members.

  • PA Nepal focuses on keeping families in contact while ensuring that innocent children are not forced to endure the traumas of prison. To this effect, their objectives are:

    • To provide a safe, secure and positive environment for the children of prisoners.
    • To ensure the reintegration of children into their families and local regions when appropriate.
    • To promote and support income generation for vulnerable individuals affected by imprisonment.
    • To advocate for prisoners’ basic rights and human rights and ensure their welfare.
    • To improve the life skills and opportunities of the most vulnerable ex-prisoners and their dependents.
    • To reduce crime by engaging individuals in meaningful activities.

THE FOUNDER

Indira Ranamagar was born into a poor and landless family. Growing up in eastern Nepal, she faced discrimination in many forms. As was often the case for women, Indira’s brothers were given the opportunity to study whereas she was given the responsibility of housework. However, during her youth, Indira became greatly inspired by the works of renowned Nepalese writer and human rights activist, Parijat. Indira joined Parijat’s ‘Prisoners Assistance Mission’ and worked with her until her death in 1993. At this time, most organizations, including Parijat’s, were focused on the plight of political prisoners in Nepal. Indira identified another area of need though in prisoners who had children and after rescuing several children from the destitute prison environment and caring for them in her home or asking other organizations to care for them, she established an organization to work with prisoners and their families, ‘Prisoners Assistance Nepal’.
